Director
jthomson@kearnswest.com

Janet Thomson brings expertise in public outreach and involvement, facilitation, collaborative process management, and project management to the Kearns & West team. With a comprehensive background in environmental science and collaborative outreach, Janet maintains a thorough understanding of the communications, regulatory, and scientific aspects of her work. Her key sectors include renewable energy policy, energy facility siting, and natural resource management.

Janet’s energy practice currently focuses on siting electric transmission lines to access renewable energy resources; convening policy dialogues to address hydrokinetic technology licensing; and siting and licensing both traditional hydropower and hydrokinetic projects. Janet provides collaborative process design and management, public involvement and outreach implementation, and facilitation for these projects.

Recent natural resource management projects include public outreach and involvement support for the Marin Municipal Water District’s Vegetation Management Plan update; project management and collaborative process strategy for the development of the Marine Protected Areas Monitoring Enterprise’s monitoring plan; co-facilitation and process management for Pathway 2007, a collaborative land and watershed planning process in the Tahoe Basin; and other land management projects in northern California.

Janet develops and maintains strong relationships with stakeholders, partners, and clients, and provides thoughtful, experience-driven collaborative process advice. With a firm focus on the interests, needs, and goals of all the participants, Janet works to devise lasting solutions to controversial and sensitive energy and natural resource problems.

Janet is based in Kearns & West’s San Francisco office. She has more than seven years of experience with environmental research and collaborative process management. Prior to working for Kearns & West, she worked as an environmental educator and a habitat restoration biologist. She serves as the Chair for the Northern California Chapter of the International Association for Public Participation. Janet graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. in neuroscience and behavior and a B.A. in history.
