Inside PR
magazine put it this way: “One area in which the agency is a
pioneer is in assisting clients with collaborative planning and consensus
building. Kenneth Kearns is among the most respected counselors in
the country in this arena.”
Ken’s work includes both collaborative solutions and public
relations. Ken is a skilled architect and manager of major collaborative
solutions programs, and has led the way in bringing this high-inolvement
form of public relations to business and government. He has also long
been a senior strategist on more traditional types of public relations
and outreach programs.
He has nearly four decades of experience framing and presenting to
the public some of the most complex issues and developments of our
time—in areas including energy and telecommunications. His public
information and public relations work is diverse, including environment-related
issues, high technology, and education.
He is a scientist by training and remains current on key issues that
are important to the firm’s clients.
Ken’s collaborative solutions experience has included work in
areas including hydro power, Clean Air Act compliance, national energy
policy, energy supply, transmission pricing and access, facilities
sitings, pollution prevention, and consumer protection. He led a groundbreaking
program for a major electricity provider, helping them decide, jointly
with stakeholders, how best to manage and meet electricity demand.
His clients for public-involvement have included major companies such
as Duke Power and government agencies, including the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission, to name just a few. Over the years, his facilitation
and strategic skills have also been applied to communications and
business planning for diverse clients, ranging from Electric Power
Research Institute to Dartmouth College.
Ken is based in Kearns & West’s Washington office. He earned
a BS in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State University and
a Ph.D. in the same field at the University of Arizona. He is an accredited
member of the Public Relations Society of America. Prior to founding
the firm, he held various engineering, management, and public outreach
positions at Westinghouse.
